Available courses

Higher English is a Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) accredited course. A pass in Higher English is required for most university courses, including Teacher Training (PGDE).

There are four components of assessment in the Higher English course:

  • Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation
  • Critical Reading
  • Portfolio of Writing
  • Spoken Language

The course consists of 24 SCQF credit points which includes time for preparation for course assessment. The notional length of time for candidates to complete the course is 160 hours. Students undertaking this qualification are advised to commit to 4-6 hours of study per week.



If you wish to be considered for a place on any of our NQ courses, you must complete the appropriate application task by 30th August.

Completed tasks should be uploaded as a Word or pdf document. If handwriting your answers, you should scan all pages before uploading. See instructions below:

How to scan documents on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open Notes and select a note or create a new one.
  2. Tap the Camera button, then tap Scan Documents.
  3. Place your document in view of the camera.
  4. If your device is in Auto mode, your document will automatically scan.
  5. Tap Save when you have scanned all pages.

How to scan documents on your Android phone

  1. Open the Google Drive app.
  2. In the bottom right, tap Add.
  3. Tap Scan.
  4. Take a photo of the document you'd like to scan. Adjust scan area: Tap Crop. Take photo again: Tap Re-scan current page. Scan another page: Tap Add.
